Golden Week Roady Trip Day 2 — Ferry Ride to Hokkaido

Sorry if I’ve been a little unresponsive.  I’m on the road. It’s Golden Week in Japan and we’re on vacation.  The weather could not be better.

This was the second day of our trip. We left mainland Japan on a ferry.

Our room.

Those cupboards have square pillows.  You can sleep on the tatami floors. Many were.  The shoes stay outside in a cupboard.

We got the standard, but there are nicer options.

On the ferry there are public tables that line the windows. Each table has two chairs.  Within a short time, most of the tables were taken by guests.

The only available table I found had one chair because three women at the next table had nicked its chair.  That was fine. There was only one of me, and I only wanted the other chair for my bag.

However, all three of them left and they left their trash — half full water bottles and wrappers — at their table.  No one would sit down because of this. It was like a “trashy” dibs.

The table sat empty for over 45 minutes. I checked the time.  Finally, I decided they weren’t returning and had left their trash and bottles because they couldn’t be bothered to throw them away.

I reclaimed the second chair for my table and put my bag there. Within ten minutes, those three ladies returned and threw quite a few dirty looks at me, as if I’d committed a felony by taking back my table’s chair.

It seems to me if you abandon a table for over an hour you lose any claim to that table or the other table’s chair.  They didn’t seem to think so.
