Cherry Blossoms Season Here? Goodbye Clear Skies!

One thing I’ve learned over the years of living in Japan is that when the cherry blossoms finally arrive, so does the cloudy weather and the rain.  When I was young, anime and manga always portrayed cherry blossoms season as 90% sunny.

However, the grey sky and wet weather come with the blossoms.  Last week was the last day with blue skies and pink blossoms.  Now it’s just grey to rainy to grey again.

As soon as full bloom hits, bam the blue skies all but go away and it seems to stay that way until all the petals are gone.  It’s the biggest tragedy of cherry blossom season in my opinion.

If you manage to be off on one of those rare full bloom days and it has clear skies then the crowds will be enormous.  I looked at the forecast this week for a single clear sky day and its just cloud cover over Tokyo for the next ten days.

The blossoms will be long gone by the time the weather clears and then we’ll get a brief break before the rainy season.  I used to think it was just a bad year, but now I’ve realized it’s always like this.

You hardly ever get to enjoy the cherry blossoms in full bloom under blue skies.  So sad.

When I was in my twenties, I moved to Japan and met a man there. We embarked on our adventure through life and love. I have lived with him in Japan ever since. We want to start a family, but that is proving difficult. I struggle with infertility. We almost had a child, but that ended in tragedy. Now we enjoy each day and hope that one day we'll hear the pitter-patter of little feet and the bubbly laughter of a child. In the meantime, I enjoy writing, love, studying, traveling, and working. These posts are my thoughts and stories of my life here.

  1. Yeah I think the first year I was in Japan we had more sunny days during hanami season. The trees here have just fully bloomed and the gray has settled in but it’s always gray here sadly. The forecast says a couple of sunny days this week. We’ll see if that turns out true.

  2. We’ve probably been lucky. We traveled to Japan for the first time in April of 2000.
Not in Tokyo, but at Mt Fuji we had the full bloom with Fuji in the background and blue skies.
But you are right since that time in Tokyo each time we were there it was rainy!
